A land art project at Starry Skies festival. Working with a team of families and children attending the festival, we constructed the body of a giant angel from wood within the local woodland. Over the course of the festival we developed the sculpture, weaving withy and leaves into the main structure to strengthen and decorate it. We had a lot of fun constructing the detail on the giant wings and haloed head out of withy.
The Angel was a completely communal project, largely lead by those getting stuck in during the workshops. Some families turned up every day – it became their piece of work. The structure created a den as well as a sculpture and was enjoyed by big and small alike.
“Pippa’s sculpture workshops enthralled Starry Skies campers of all ages – it was great to see both kids and parents working together, reconnecting with the land and getting their hands dirty! Once they were completed, seeing unsuspecting folk stumble across them in the woods was really special.” Starry Skies staff
It was lovely to revisit the site at the 2017 festival and find the angel completely intact and see it beautifully lit at night. It was also great to hear ‘The Angel’ referred to as a reference point within the woods.
